The Psychological Toll of Overinvolved Parenting
Overinvolved parenting can severely impact the psychological well-being of college students. Clinical psychologist Karen Able notes that students often feel compelled to consult their parents immediately when faced with problems, rather than developing their own problem-solving skills. 'If they could persevere through the discomfort of not knowing what to do, they would essentially be practicing that skill, and will at some point learn to do it for themselves,' she explains. This lack of independence can lead to low self-confidence and an overwhelming fear of failure.
