The Importance of User Testing
Cagan emphasizes that testing ideas with real users is arguably the most crucial part of a product manager's job. He explains that while you may not be as proficient as a trained usability engineer, you can still identify serious issues with your product. Cagan highlights the need to test both usability (can users figure out how to use the product?) and value (do users actually want to use it?). He provides practical advice on finding test subjects, such as using a charter customer program, trade shows, Craigslist, and even friends and family, while ensuring a diverse sample. Cagan states, 'You have a one-time-only opportunity with each user you test—the opportunity to learn how they think about this problem today, without your product.'
